Personal Information Disclosure
In this course, you will use a version of a suite of software tools called Syrus in order to complete some of your assignments. We hope these tools will allow you to practice certain skills more effectively and thereby result in improvements in your ability to make sound proof arguments about various kinds of assertions in predicate calculus. Data we collect about you as a student in this class, and the results of on-line surveys, will be recorded so they can be used to study the usability and usefulness of Syrus. Specifically, we will collect the following information about you and your use of Syrus:
- Gender, minority status, math ACT/SAT scores, OSU GPA, OSU major
- Course grades in CSE 221, CSE 222, and CSE 321 (if applicable)
- Grades on all assignments, exams, etc., and final course grade, in Math 366
- List of all Syrus problems you attempt
- History of all interactions between your browser and the Syrus web server, on each problem attempted; this will include recording which button caused a submission to the web server and the contents of the web form submitted (i.e., part of your attempt to solve a Syrus logic problem), as well as the elapsed time between presentation of a problem or subproblem and submission of your response to the Syrus web server
- Survey information about your attitudes, study habits, and opinions about the usability of Syrus
Later, we plan to report summaries of results of this experimental approach in published articles and in presentations at conferences. We will not use your name in any of these research reports. Your participation in this research study is very much appreciated and is completely voluntary. If you don’t want us to use data collected from you in our research study, then check the button below to opt out of the research study. Your choice to participate in the research study or opt out of it will have no impact on your grade in Math 366. No one except the researcher who accesses OSU records for the information in 1-3 above will know which students have chosen to participate in the research study. In addition, once the information in 1-3 above has been collected by this researcher, and the information in 4-6 has been collected by Syrus and associated by this researcher with the information in 1-3, your name will be removed from all records associated with the project. Both before and after your name is removed, these records will be stored in a database secured according to OSU’s information security policies, procedures, and standards (see http://buckeyesecure.osu.edu).
